Onion Impact Cluster (OIC)

Our focus is on enhancing the onion value chain by providing actionable recommendations for introducing new onion varieties and advanced postharvest technologies. We aim to improve onion yield, quality, and shelf life while minimizing postharvest losses. By promoting investment in modern storage and postharvest facilities, we strive to optimize the entire onion supply chain, ensuring better returns for farmers and consistent quality for consumers. Conducted successful field-level trials over two years. Made clear and actionable recommendations for introducing suitable new varieties and technologies for onion cultivation and post harvest handling and storage.

Key Highlights of Activities

Demonstrating effectiveness of Dutch postharvest and storage technology for shelf life, waste minimization and quality of onions. Training onion sector stakeholders (traders, storage providers, extension workers, educators, policymakers) to utilize improved storage technology. Developing a business case for onion sector entrepreneurs for investment in improved storage facilities. Improving brand awareness of Dutch horticultural technologies, seeds and possibilities for cooperation.

Key Achievements

Two year successful field level trials have been completed. Identified best onion varieties suitable for Bangladeshi climatic conditions. Started commercial distribution of suitable Dutch onion varieties
